WE STARTED WITH

Women in data science

The Women in Data Science (WiDS) initiative aims to inspire and educate data scientists worldwide, regardless of gender, and to support women in the field. WiDS started as a one-day technical conference at Stanford in November 2015. Five years later, WiDS is a global movement that includes a number of worldwide initiatives:

  • A conference with 150+ regional events worldwide in more than 60 countries, reaching 100,000 participants annually online and in person
  • A datathon, encouraging participants to hone their skills using a social impact challenge
  • A podcast series, featuring data science leaders from around the world talking about their work, their journeys, and lessons learned along the way
  • An education outreach program to encourage secondary school students to consider careers in data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and related fields

SUMMER DATA SCIENCE CAMP!

Ready for some summer entertainment…. for your brain?

Join LA County’s first data science workshop and learn about the fundamentals together with WiT|LA, Google Government Cloud, and Women in Data Science@Stanford! No prior experience in Data Science required. We hope to spark your curiosity with the workshops.

What is data science? What’s the big deal? How do we use data to inform practice and policy? What are the tools available for me to use? This 6-session Data Science series will

1) Discuss these hot topics at a conceptual level;

2) Introduce big data platforms and analytical tools, such as Google BigQuery and GitHub; and

3) Start your first data science project (voluntary participation) with guidance from experienced data scientists and peers.

WiDS Los Angeles @ LA County is an independent event that is organized by WiT|LA as part of the annual WiDS Worldwide conference organized by Stanford University and an estimated 150+ locations worldwide, which features outstanding women doing outstanding work in the field of data science. All genders are invited to attend all WiDS Worldwide conference events.

REQUIREMENTS

Interest in data science and an appetite to learn!

Programming experience in probability, statistics and mathematics is helpful but not required. This is an introduction level workshop.

STRUCTURE

WORKSHOP

Consists of a data science tutorial, team-based practical session focused on a single data science task

INTRODuCTION TO DATA

Introduction to data science and machine learning concepts and methods. Perfect for all the newbies out there!

HANDS-on EXPERIENCE

You will be able to form teams during the workshop and get hands-on experience implementing models and working with real data sets.
